A substantial update to my portrait photography archive, bringing together artists, performers, athletes, models, creatives and people photographed across commercial and personal projects.
I’ve been revisiting and rebuilding the portrait photography section of the website, bringing together work made across different periods of my practice and presenting it with a much simpler approach.
The updated archive moves between artist portraits, fashion and model photography, athletes and performers, personal branding, film photography and more observational portraiture. Some images are highly considered, while others deliberately retain the environments in which they were made.
Looking back through older work from the past decade or more, alongside sharing newer work, has reinforced how much my approach to portraiture has evolved. Completing my Bachelor of Photography in 2022 and developing a vocabulary around my personal art practice has really helped.
I’d also like to say thanks to everyone who has worked with me over the years to help create my body of work. From studio or tight deadlines and budgets to mountain tops, through hot Kiwi summers to Baltic wet and cold days we would all prefer to stay indoors… my portraits carry OUR experiences behind the image. Without subjects my work would simply not exist and when it all flows- is there anything better?
I’m also increasingly interested in allowing photographs to remain open and imperfect — keeping the room, the edges of a backdrop or the surrounding environment when those details contribute something to the portrait, rather than removing them simply because I can.
I guess now is the right time for my highly commercial work to live alongside my more creative practice, allowing both to cross-pollinate in process and outcome.
Despite the range of subjects and approaches, there’s a continuity running through all of my work: photographs built around the individual and their environment.
There are more updates to come, but for now I’m happy with the work available within the archives and the broader picture it offers of my photographic voice and scope.
