Christchurch’s Last Night of the Proms brought music, colour, and a packed crowd together. I captured the performers, atmosphere, and the emotion of the evening. Here’s a look at the night through my lens.
The Last Night of the Proms is one of those events that feels bigger than the programme itself. It’s a mix of celebration, nostalgia, and pure community energy — a space where people gather not just to watch a performance, but to be part of something shared. My role for the evening was to document the colour, movement, and emotion unfolding on stage and in the crowd. From the musicians setting the tone in those opening moments to the audience swaying together during the classics, the night carried an atmosphere that was both joyful and grounded.
Event photography is always a balance between anticipation and reaction. At Proms, that rhythm was constant — bright lighting changes, expressive performers, spontaneous crowd moments, and the small details that give an event its personality.
Capturing those elements meant moving lightly, observing closely, and letting the story of the night reveal itself. What stood out most was the community connection: families, longtime supporters, new attendees, and performers sharing the same excitement. These moments — the human ones — are what give event photography its real narrative.
Christchurch is full of iconic events, but Last Night of the Proms remains a standout because of the feeling it creates. I hope these images reflect that sense of warmth, celebration, and shared experience.
