Portrait photography for contemporary couples and unconventional lovers. Drawing on contemporary influence and editorial fashion, my approach celebrates individuality, genuine connection and photographs that feel distinctly your own. Connection, not content.
After being asked so many times over the years if I offer this type of portrait work – I’m very pleased to introduce an additional direction in my photography with couples and engagement portrait photography in Christchurch, bringing together my experience in commercial, editorial and personal portraiture with a considered approach to photographing people and their relationships.
My approach to photographing couples draws on contemporary portraiture and editorial fashion, with an emphasis on connection, not content. Rather than following conventional engagement photography formulas, I’m interested in genuine interactions, individuality and the small details that make each relationship unique.
Drawing on my extensive background of more than 15 years in portrait photography, including fashion photography and editorial portraiture, these sessions combine considered lighting and composition with a relaxed, collaborative photographic process.
There is no expectation to perform for the camera or recreate familiar romantic imagery. The intention is to make photographs that feel contemporary, personal and honest, allowing each couple the freedom to be themselves.
We can photograph your place and time, indoors or out, on film or digital. Sessions can take place at my Christchurch photography studio, on location, or across both environments, creating a distinctive and varied series of portraits that explore different qualities of light, atmosphere and connection.
Studio couples photography offers an alternative to conventional outdoor engagement sessions, allowing us to explore light, form and expression without relying on a picturesque location. Combining studio and location photography brings together different visual approaches while maintaining a consistent sense of intimacy and connection.
Medium-format film photography is also available as an option alongside digital photography. Working with my vintage 1950s twin-lens reflex camera, we can photograph on colour or black-and-white film, introducing the distinctive character of analogue photography. The slower, more deliberate process offers another way of seeing and experiencing the session, producing photographs with a unique visual quality.
Each session includes dedicated time for photography, image selection, editing and colour work. I’m offering a limited number of couples and engagement sessions each year, allowing the time and attention this work deserves.
