Beekeepers is a personal documentary project exploring the people and environments behind beekeeping in Canterbury, New Zealand, created to honour the quiet, essential relationship between humans and bees.
Bees are modern-day superheroes and vital to the survival of our planet, supporting everything from the smallest flowers to entire forests. Without them, much of our food production would cease.
Their role as pollinators is fundamental to keeping ecosystems healthy and sustaining life as we know it. Created in 2021 as part of my final-year photography undergraduate study at ARA, this project set out to discover who the beekeeping community of Canterbury is and to document their working environments on film.
Spending time with these farmers and hobbyists revealed how central their relationships with bees truly are — without beekeepers, many colonies would simply collapse.
As the weeks passed, it became clear that New Zealand honey producers are a diverse and deeply passionate community, united by a shared commitment to protecting and sustaining bee populations.
