I’m currently updating my fashion portfolio, working through a large body of portrait photography that I’ve created over the past decade and finally finding the time to edit and share more of it.
This session with Anastassia and Jayshri from Portfolio Models Agency was photographed at Taylors Mistake in Christchurch, working with the ocean, changing light and the warmth of golden hour across both colour and black and white film.
Much of my personal photography over the years has been created on film, particularly medium format, and there is a substantial amount of that work that I’ve held back from sharing while concentrating on other areas of my photography.
Bringing these photographs into my featured work is part of showing a much broader picture of the photography I create, from contemporary commercial imagery through to fashion and creative portraiture.
For me, these aren’t separate photographic practices. Film, digital photography and newer creative technologies are simply different tools, each capable of producing a very different visual outcome depending on the brief.
That versatility is something I particularly enjoy about commercial photography. Some projects call for clean, contemporary artificially lit imagery, while others benefit from something more natural, editorial, tactile or distinctive. The process and tools can change considerably while the attention to people, light and composition remains the same.
I’m also working increasingly with individuals who want more creative portraits for their personal branding — photography with a stronger visual identity than a conventional professional portrait or headshot.
